When a reasonably large number of (successful?) people gather, what one does, or has done for work inevitably comes up. Sometimes (as at school reunions perhaps) it is about blatant competition – who succeeded, who didn’t, who stayed mid – at others (such as family reunions) it masquerades as catching up.
For my sins, I got asked the question at breakfast today, which set me thinking about the trajectory my work life has taken so far. The sense is very much one of being somewhat stalled. Being solidly mid-career, in roles which have skewed technical specialist rather than generalist, a lot of my career planning time is spent pondering future directions. The quip about rolling stones gathering no moss does come to mind.
I still think I have one more stint abroad in my life. Will it make for fascinating dinner time conversation, only God/ the Universe knows.
