Asa seemingly burst on the scene from nowhere in 2008, and my corner of the Nigerian Blogosphere was there for it. Of course she wasn’t an overnight success but had honed her craft for years. The Wikipedia page is a treasure trove of information, her Parisian birth, Nigerian influences and a return to formal musical study.
Fire on the Mountain hit home on several fronts, but for me it was the lyrics, Fela-esque in their bite, social commentary and remarkably prescient. They could be written for today’ s world: blood of innocent children on our TV screens (Gaza), another man’s war (social nedia culture wars), all whilst we are (wilfully?) ignorant of the fire raging on the mountain.
