Poetry has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember, reading, pretending to write some, and seeking out poetry podcasts such as Poetry Unbound and Read Me A Poem] from time to time. It was therefore a particular delight to discover Read a Little Poetry as part of JUnited.
Yesterday’s entry, Char March’s Washing my Mother’s hair hits deep, like only a few other poems have hit me, reminding me particularly of Dan Howell’s Piano, which I of course once tried to ape .
Something about the contrast between the current state of seemingly once powerful Matriarchs and their past is both humbling and powerful. In the remembrance of the “world record in Running For The Bus” from last summer, and the “melody somehow prettier as a remnant than whatever it used to be” is an acceptance of the present and a celebration of what was.
To quote Pádraig Ó Tuama:
A poem does. And what a poem does makes a poem. And what you do with a poem makes a poem.
