71. The End of the Beginning

The last day of school before the summer break and the start of the new school year was a great time to pause and celebrate just how far L has come. She had to miss the first two months of the (reception) year, which left her struggling to make friends and connections in class. The first few weeks were hard, the breakthrough only coming in late December, in time for participating in the nativity activities.

Over the course of the school year she has morphed from the kid who felt no one liked her at the start (with more than one incident which we chalked off as kids being kids) to one who proudly proclaims she has 10,000 Hundred friends. Two things stick out as high points: being given an award for being a friendly, caring classmate to a kid having a meltdown, and watching her wait for a different crying classmate at drop off, holding her hand and walking in together.

She most certainly does not get her energy and people skills from me, but thank goodness she has them. On this evidence, she will do a lot of good with them. It is only the end of the beginning (of the first year) of course, but this Dad could not be prouder!
