97. A Throwback to the City of Red Earth

I have a message on LinkedIn, not quite on the Lopes World Cup Level, to thank for a fantastic afternoon out, one which may not be topped in a while. The food, the company, and the opportunity to reminisce over life back in the city of red earth was much welcome, particularly given the work context I am in right now.

Company was an old friend from my days in the old country who had somehow ended up ten minutes from my office in good old Blighty. With meetings piling up I was in two minds about going, but decided in the end to make a good fist of it. It helped that there was a Nandos close by I suspect.

There was a lot to catch up on, from which I left feeling like I have not done enough to keep up with friends and acquaintances from that period of my life. Nigh on thirty years ago, I left for University and never really returned. After university came work away in the South-South of Nigeria, then leaving, in quick succession.

I could throw the Yoruba proverb, Àwọn ọmọ ogún kò lè jọ ṣeré fún ogún ọdún (twenty children cannot play together for twenty years, ie people’s paths diverge and childhood friends grow apart with time) in the mix, but that would be doing what was a close knit community growing up a great disservice.

It is yet another one of those meet-ups in the vein of old friends, old haunts and old memories to mull over, which seem to be happening a lot over the past month. Doing better, particularly given the relatively short distance involved in this case, must be on the list of things to improve in the Year of Being 47.
