85. Going (True) North

It is nearly a year since I was up here. Then, work drew me up, leaving little time for socialising and getting to grips with the place I left well on six years ago. The primarily reason is purely social – a family that is about as close to family as could be for me have a milestone event, and I am up here to be part of that.

A secondary consideration is reconnecting to the life I once lived here: the hotel I have chosen is across the road from the building I worked in for nearly nine years, Union Square with all its delights is a short hop away, and the beach, the scene of many an early morning run is a walking distance away. Bar my stint offshore in the Northern North Sea, it is about as far North as I have been, most certainly properly Northern than the Manchesters of this world.

The journey up, coming close on the heels of my Dutch odyssey, has not been the easiest (the only thing easy about EasyJet is its name), but I am here now, phone call home done and just about to get some shut eye.

There will be many familiar faces to see tomorrow, old haunts to visit and old memories to rehash, but for now all I can do is take a deep breath and brace for tomorrow.
